Tidying up

Obviously, the first step is to download and install HTML Tidy (which you'll find in Resources). HTML Tidy is available on most platforms, including Windows, Linux, and MacOS. The default executable is a command-line tool, but GUI versions are available for Windows and MacOS.

To run HTML Tidy, open a terminal and issue the following command:

tidy -asxhtml -numeric < index.html > index.xml

That's it! HTML Tidy immediately converts index.html into index.xml. HTML Tidy will print messages that highlight issues with the original HTML document during the conversion. In most cases, you can safely ignore these messages.

HTML Tidy runs as a filter, so it expects standard input and it prints the result to the standard output. The redirection operators (< and >) allow you to work with files. By default, HTML Tidy produces a clean HTML page, but you can set two options to output XML, instead:

* -asxhtml outputs XHTML documents instead of HTML.
* -numeric uses character entities instead of HTML entities. For example, î is replaced with î.

Induction and deduction are pervasive elements in critical thinking. They are also somewhat misunderstood terms. Arguments based on experience or observation are best expressed inductively, while arguments based on laws or rules are best expressed deductively. Most arguments are mainly inductive. In fact, inductive reasoning usually comes much more naturally to us than deductive reasoning.

Inductive reasoning moves from specific details and observations (typically of nature) to the more general underlying principles or process that explains them (e.g., Newton's Law of Gravity). It is open-ended and exploratory, especially at the beginning. The premises of an inductive argument are believed to support the conclusion, but do not ensure it. Thus, the conclusion of an induction is regarded as a hypothesis. In the Inductive method, also called the scientific method, observation of nature is the authority.

In contrast, deductive reasoning typically moves from general truths to specific conclusions. It opens with an expansive explanation (statements known or believed to be true) and continues with predictions for specific observations supporting it. Deductive reasoning is narrow in nature and is concerned with testing or confirming a hypothesis. It is dependent on its premises. For example, a false premise can lead to a false result, and inconclusive premises will also yield an inconclusive conclusion. Deductive reasoning leads to a confirmation (or not) of our original theories. It guarantees the correctness of a conclusion. Logic is the authority in the deductive method.

If you can strengthen your argument or hypothesis by adding another piece of information, you are using inductive reasoning. If you cannot improve your argument by adding more evidence, you are employing deductive reasoning.

Sharpening Reel Mowers

Lapping compound for sharpening any reel mower - approximately one pound.

Here are the instructions for sharpening your manual reel mower.

1. Remove wheel by removing e-clip and pulling off wheel.
2. Remove small gear (pinion gear).
Notice to Agri-Fab Silent Reel owners: the pinion gear is held on by a retainer ring, snap off retainer ring, gear will slide off. Use of retainer ring pliers will make this easier.
3. Remove (pawl) the small metal pin that is in the shaft where the pinion gear was.
4. Turn pawl 1/2 turn clockwise and put back into shaft.
5. Turn pinion gear 1/2 turn -outside of gear, now on inside. Replace pinion gear on shaft.
6. Replace wheel and install e-clip.
7. Adjust the cutter bar so that the cutter bar blade has light but firm contact with the reel blades across the full width of the bar.
8. Spread a thin layer of lapping compound on reel blades (lapping compound available from Reel Mowers, Etc. 1-888-384-1033)
9. Flip push handle to front of the mower and push mower backwards spinning blades.
10. Turn the reel blades backwards until the blades rotate relatively freely. Check the reel blades for smooth, even complete grind. Reel blades will be evenly polished when lapping is completed.
11. Repeat steps 7, 8 and 9 if needed to achieve 10.
12. Repeat steps 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 to return to original position.
13. Using a garden hose, clean lapping compound from the blades. Allow to dry.
14. Put handle back to its mowing position and you are ready to mow.

My first ringtones were distorted and almost blew the speakers so here's
what I found out that I WISHED I had known when I created my first set of
ringtones.

Hints on creating Motorola RAZR V3 ringtones.

Create a 21 to 25 second WAV file using Audacity freeware on WinXP
Don't go any higher than a sampling rate of 22.05 Khz
Effect Fade In at about 2% and Effect Fade Out at around 19%
Make sure you "Split Stereo Track" into a single track
Then, close one of the two tracks
Ctrl+A, Quick Mix,
Increase volume with Ctrl+A, Effect, Equalize to +9 db at 1000 Hz
Remove base with Ctrl+A, Effect, High Pass Filter, 150 Hz
Compress to MP3 with RazorLame freeware
Set constant bitrate by unchecking the variable bit rate (VBR)
Set bitrate 32 kbps mono, set sampling rate to 22.05 kHz
The final ringtone file size should be less than 120 kb on disk

Transfer the ringtone to your Motorola RAZR V3 using Motorola Phone Tools
or P2KTools.

Hello Mr. Blue Sky

Its the same principle that makes the sky blue (when we're not having wonderful sunsets). Those longer wavelengths of light (the reds and oranges) pass right through the atmosphere, while the shorter wavelengths (blue) hit gas molecules in our atmosphere and scatter about. If we had no atmosphere, not only would we all be dead, but there would be no blue sky at all. A visitor in a space suit standing on the surface would look out at a black sky dotted by tiny stars and a bright white sun about the same angular size in the sky as the moon.

International Characters in Mac OS X

Some language classes at Portland Community College make use of WebCT to compliment their course. WebCT provides excellent tools for online communication. The mail tool, discussion tool, and chat tool can all be used by students and faculty to communicate using what they've learned in class.

One problem that these courses encounter is related to some of the characters in different languages that don't show up on our keyboards. Not to fear, there are ways around this using keyboard shortcuts and using tools built in to the Mac OS.
Keyboard Shortcuts

There are many keyboard shortcuts on the mac for inserting characters. To insert a character with an accent, type the key combination then the letter you want to insert.

For example, if you want to type á, you would press option-e (option and E at the same time), then press the A key.
For French

* ê -- accent circumflex (option-i)
* ü -- accent tréma (option-u)
* á,é,í -- accent acute (option-e)
* à,è,ì -- accent grave (option-`)
* ç -- accent cedilla (option-c)

For German

* ü -- umlaut (option-u)
* ß -- esset (option-s)

For Spanish

* á,é,í -- accent (option-e)
* ñ -- accent tilde (option-n)
* ü -- umlaut (option-u)
* ¿ -- upside-down questionmark (option-shift-/ )
* ¡ -- upside-down exclamation (option-1)

For Other

* ø -- option-o
* è -- option-`
* ñ -- option-n
* å -- option-a
* ü -- option-u
* ç -- option-c

To apply an accent to a capital letter, also hold down the shift key.

and note down (or copy) the ID of the key whose key expiry you would like to edit (e.g. '277FF772'). Then pass the key ID to gpg and enter its console mode:

# There are several types of concertinas, but you'll likely only run across the two major ones: Anglo-German and English. The Anglo concertina plays different notes on push and pull (diatonic, much like a harmonica) whereas an English concertina plays the same notes on push and pull (chromatic, like a piano accordion). The easiest way to tell the two apart from pictures is that the Anglo has a wrist-strap while the English has a thumb strap with a metal "J" at the bottom for the pinky finger.

# An Anglo is good for Irish music or folk music, with push/pull on the bellows quickly changing the notes. An English is more versatile having additional buttons for the accidentals (sharps and flats). If you are used to playing accordion or want more choices in the music you play choose an English.

An Anglo will typically have a particular chord associated with it "C/G" or "G/D" for example, and have rows of chords. An English will have columns of buttons, the middle 2 columns are the natural or "white notes", and the outer two columns of buttons are the accidentals. A 30 button English will have some missing places for sharps/flats, whereas a 48 button English should have all 4 columns filled with buttons.

A concertina has about the same range as a violin. Sheet music for the violin is playable on the concertina.

# Chords are playable on concertinas, but start with simple melodies first. On an English or Duet concertina just about any major or minor chord can be made, if you are dexterous enough. An Anglo is more limited in that regard.
Because it is diatonic (different note on push/pull) an Anglo can be more difficult to play for experienced musicians with other instruments. A lot depends on the type of music or sound desired. For more questions ask on a Concertina forum such as at www.concertina.net. Some players prefer one over the other than many players do have strong opinions about their chosen style.

Log a user out remotely

Over an ssh connection, you can use the following shell command to list the processes of a user in order so that the lowest number is at the bottom (so you see it when the script finishes). This is probably the x-session manager or initial bash login. Kill that process to kill the user session.

Why are some eggs brown or green?

White shelled eggs come from chickens of Mediterranean background. Brown shelled eggs come from American breeds. Blue and green shells come from a South American breed called Araucana. The color of the shell has nothing to do with flavor or nutritional value. These factors are directly related to the chicken's diet. Chickens that are fed foods with strong flavors such as onions or garlic will lay eggs with a distorted flavor.

Screenshots in OSX

I feel like an idiot. I've been using an application (Freesnap) forever to take screen captures of things in OSX. The ability to capture the screen (or a portion thereof) is friggin built in. Yes, Printscreen or ALT+Printscreen in Windows captures the screen, but you have to paste the capture into a program to save it. In OSX you just Command+Shift+3 or Command+Shift+4 to capture the screen or portion thereof, and it saves the capture right to the desktop, handy!

Scanner PRO-97 tips

Turning ID Lists Off and ON (In Closed Mode only) Contents
Before Scanning
1. In Manual mode select any channel of the bank you want to turn a list on or off in by entering the bank number and channel number (Ex: 001) then press MAN to advance to the channel.
2. Press PGM then TRUNK to put the scanner in program and trunk modes. You will see the bank number (0-9), list number (0-4), and the list status (ON or OFF) on the 1st line, the ID# in the list (0-29) on the 2nd line, the ID on the 3rd line, and bank tag on the 4th line (if programmed).
3. Press TRUNK (each time) to select one of the ID lists (0-4) to turn on or off.
4. Press FUNC then 1 to turn the list on or off. Press SCAN or MANUAL to exit.

During Scan in Closed Mode (More practical for just turning lists off)
1. Press FUNC then TRUNK while any ID in the selected bank is displayed to bring up the 'ID Banks:' list. The cursor will blink on the list number that has the receiving ID.
2. Press FUNC then list number (0-4) while any ID in the selected bank is displayed to turn the list on or off.
Note: You will have to wait to receive an ID in a list that is turned on to see the 'ID Banks:' list to turn a list on that is off. Quickly press FUNC then TRUNK while an ID is displayed to get rid of the 'ID Banks:' line (and see the ID tag again).

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The - MTV LoTR Parody
Using Disk One Of The 4-Disk Special Extended DVD Edition (Not the 2-Disk Set). Go to "Select a Scene" and go to the very last scene on the selection which should be #27 "The Council of Elrond". Press Down Once and you should see a little ring next to "New Scene". Select it and Peter Jackson should come on telling you that you've stumbled across a surprise. Which is the MTV parody done at the last MTV Movie Awards with Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

In the movie, during the battle of Helm's Deep when the Uruk-hai are trying to break down the door of the fortress with a battering ram (the first door), you'll see the close up of a human soldier throwing a spear from the top of the wall witch hits one of the Uruk-hai. That soldier is actor Andy Serkis who plays sneaky creature Gollum in the movie. Because Gollum is computer generated character and Andy Serkis's real face is never seen in the movie, I guess Serkis or Peter Jackson (movie director) wanted to have him in a human form at least in one shot, or they thought it would be cool for those who knew how Andy Serkis actually look’s like.
I saw this in the extended version but that does not mean it isn’t in the original one.

William Kissam Vanderbilt called it Idle Hour: a 100-room house in Oakdale, Long Island, as sumptuous and showy as a Summer Palace of the Romanovs. Thirty years ago it cost about $7,000,000, but nowadays it is a bit run down. Last week 500 Truth Students, Adepts and Master Metaphysicians twitched on hard chairs in the big reception hall with its encrusted ceiling, ivory-colored fireplace, concealed pipe organ. Above the doors were signs reading "Peace, Discrimination, Enlightenment, Inspiration." James Bernard Schafer, Master Metaphysician, entered.

Conversation stopped. He strode to the platform. "Peace," he said. "Peace," said the 500.* Dimpled, businesslike Mr. Schafer, M.M., was dedicating Idle Hour as a sort of spiritual sanatorium for the members of one of the most elusive cults in the U. S.—The Royal Fraternity of Master Metaphysicians. It will be called Peace Haven. Mr. Schafer acquired it some months ago for $350,000, raised by Love Gifts from his disciples. "Truth Students never lack anything," he says. It will be used as a retreat "for those Students who desire Metaphysical assistance or loving care. . . ." One of the wings will be made over into Camp Peace for children. Every night a loud speaker in the reception hall will broadcast an inspirational message by telephone from Mr. Schafer in Manhattan.

Room and board at Peace Haven: from $14 a week, up.

At the Royal Fraternity's headquarters, the Forum of Truth and the Center of Peace (a fairish-sized lecture room) in Manhattan's Steinway Hall. Mr. Schafer delivers four talks a week. Truth Students become Master Metaphysicians after studying more than a year and a half.

What they study is far from clear, but the Royal Fraternity's creed might be described as a theological goulash of Rosicrucianism, Christian Science, Christianity, Supermind Science, faith healing and How to Win Friends and Influence People. As to the number of middle-aged ladies he has attracted, "the Christian Science Church doesn't publish the number of its membership," says Mr. Schafer; "Why should we?" However: "Our organization is unorganized. You can't define a thing like that."

Last week some 100 Fraternity members moved out to Peace Haven to stay. Mr. Schafer (called by his disciples the Messenger) went back to Manhattan to continue his lectures. Said he comfortably to the press, "People think we're a lot of nuts."

*"Peace!" is also the greeting of little Father Divine's darky sect in Harlem.

It's the economy, stupid.

If this next election will be all about the economy, I thought it was time I read something about it. Economics was not a required class when I went to school (though I hear it is today), so I had a lot of catching up to do. Unfortunately, the subject is so dull that I couldn't stay awake long enough to learn very much. I did notice that I am not alone, however, it seems the majority of Americans are fairly ignorant of some of the basics too. So much so, in fact that Bush and friends have been able to repeat the mantra of supply-side economics (aka "trickle-down economics", "reaganomics", and Voodoo economics) as the answer to all our fiscal woes, and not be laughed off the political stage. When I was younger, I remember the same promises being made by Reagan and his cronies, only to find that it didn't work! The huge deficits of the Reagan era were then explained as a "tactic" that Reagan used to bankrupt the Ruskies. Oh that wily Gipper! And guess what? All those giveaways to business under Reagan put us into a recession back then too!

To argue that tax breaks for business will stimulate the economy is a blatant lie. When George W. Bush claimed on January 3, 2007 that "It is also a fact that our tax cuts have fueled robust economic growth and record revenues." [28] Andrew Samwick, who was Chief Economist on Bush's Council of Economic Advisers from 2003-2004 responded to the claim:

You are smart people. You know that the tax cuts have not fueled record revenues. You know what it takes to establish causality. You know that the first order effect of cutting taxes is to lower tax revenues. We all agree that the ultimate reduction in tax revenues can be less than this first order effect, because lower tax rates encourage greater economic activity and thus expand the tax base. No thoughtful person believes that this possible offset more than compensated for the first effect for these tax cuts. Not a single one.[29]

I started getting more interested in economics a few months ago after reading some of Ron Paul's arguments to return to the gold standard. I was totally clueless on this issue as well. I didn't realize that we have been off the gold standard since 1970 and so is everybody else. Bascially if we need more money, we just print more money! This makes it incredibly easy to keep our country in Hummers and HDTVs (and foreign wars) when we really should be paying off our debts. The trouble with adopting a gold standard today is that we can't afford to do so! If Ron Paul's dream of return to the gold standard, of having real gold in Fort Knox again (or at least enough to back all the currency we printed) were actually to come true - we would find ourselves selling off those Hummers and HDTVs to actually pay our debts.

According to our own GAO David Walker [AP story on Washington Post], we're living so far beyond our means that it will take something just short of a political miracle to right this ship wreck. We're basically owned by foreign nations, and we have assumed so much debt we'll probably never be able to pay it all back even at the incredibly cheap rates China is kind enough to offer us, as our huge social programs, aging population, and souring economy converge in a perfect storm for the next twenty years.

So far in my after-hours investigation of economics all I've learned is that if I were to handle my personal economy like the Fed runs our nation's economy, I'd be living under a bridge.

An insult to black women?

I've spent the last few days being very uncomfortable with what the mainstream news is considering a major topic of interest. In the run-up to the South Carolina Democratic primary, I've heard non-stop speculation regarding which way black women will vote. Reporters have gone into hair salons, and shopping centers and interviewed black women on the question; Will they vote for a black man, or a white woman and how are they dealing with this dilemma? I believe the question to be seriously insulting to black women - it presumes that they can not vote based on the candidate's position on issues, but will decide solely on race or gender.

For these women, a unique, and most unexpected dilemma, presents itself: Should they vote their race, or should they vote their gender? No other voting bloc in the country faces this choice.

Am I the only one that find this repugnant?
